Todays Word: Upsets!

Now We Got a Season Going!

So as I sit hear noshing on a nutritious snack of Fritos and Jalepeno Chedder bean dip, I despair as I realize it is not as Jalapeno-ey as used to be. Fortunately I got the AVP and the women are off to what looks like could be a pretty spicy season.

Today’s Word:
“Upsets”

The Jose Cuervo Ft. Lauderdale women’s open provided numerous upsets through out the women’s bracket. Most notably the recently dumped Jen Kessey Boss has teamed with Nancy Mason (pictured, April’s AVP Calendar Woman) to kick some ass. Ranked ninth overall going into the series, Boss/Mason worked their way to the championship game against the Yankees of the Beach May/Walsh. As usual (yawn!) May and Walsh walked away with titles at the 50k. However, the games were uncharacteristically close. 19-21 (Kessey Boss) 21-19 (May Walsh) for the first two matches. May Walsh turned it up in Game 3 quashing the upstarts with a 15-9 victory.
But outside of the main match-up there were several upstart teams that pulled a little shock and awe of their own. A personal favorite of mine are the Linquidst sisters, Tracy and Kelly. At 5’7 and 5’6 they have a some trouble when facing say.,.. 6’3 Kerry Walsh. But kid ya’ got moxie and they finished a very respectable 7th. While some of the other players make their living off the sponsors, both are school teachers in the off-season.
Next up 15th ranked Veteran Jenny Pavley and Brazil’s Paula Roco do some damage over their own digging their way into 5th place.

But the biggest “stand up and take notice” action was 20 seed Michelle More (no relation to Michael) and Suzanne Stonebarger who managed to to finish 5th. Who? These two have never been ranked higher than 20th in their three years of play. Always consistently good, this may be their breakout year.
Indeed it looks like it will be a much more spicy and competitive year for the AVP.
